Chapter Nine

ANOTHER DATE CANCELED. Sax grumbled under his breath as he ran. He would have thought Jim would be more willing and available considering what Sax knew, but no, he’d bailed on him. Again.

He pumped his arms harder, his legs eating up the distance between him and the woods surrounding Morefield. He had to get out and run, or he would have hunted Jim down, and yeah, that wouldn’t have ended well.

Jim had revealed a secret that could alter the course of his and Rand’s life. Sax would have thought Jim would be doing far more to convince him that he was a stand-up guy and not ship him to the sheriff. Him and his brother, but no, he’d dumped him, again.

Grunting, Sax jumped over a fallen log and steered left toward his favorite place. It overlooked Morefield and Salutem and he always found a sense of peace when he was there. The run helped too, allowing him to clear his mind and focus on whatever problem he had. Right now? Jim was his only problem.

They were mates. Wasn’t there supposed to be some insta attraction, lots of sex, and falling in love to be done? Nope, not in their case. They’d had sex once. Sex that had blown Sax’s mind and made his body hum for days after, and he wanted more, but he’d actually need to see his mate for that to happen.

The friction burns on his hand now had friction burns. He only had to think about Jim, his hard body, his soft belly that Sax loved, and a dick made for Sax’s ass and he was aching hard for the rest of the day. He ached for Jim, but there was no relief in sight.

“Fucking asshole shifter,” he gasped as he ran.

He dodged a puddle and carried on, but an uneasy feeling came over him. He wasn’t alone. He was sure of it.

Slowing to a jog, he glanced around the trees, noticing the silence. He’d been too focused on Jim that he hadn’t realized it before. Furrowing his brow, he slowed to a walk, his eyes taking note of everything around him.

The air seemed heavier, like a weight on his shoulders, the absence of any noise from the local wildlife added to the knot growing in his stomach. He swallowed, his mouth dry, and concentrated on the surrounding area.

What was going on? He’d never felt like this before? Never felt like someone was coming for him, that he needed to run in the opposite direction. That he needed to hide from the bogeyman hunting him.

He shook his head at the direction his thoughts had taken, but made sure every step he took was as silent as possible. His gut was telling him something was happening, and he’d learned to pay attention to it.

He walked on, listening until he heard something. He paused and tilted his head in the direction of the sound then stepped closer until he heard it again. Whispers ahead of him.

He moved quietly from tree to tree until he neared the spot where he heard the sounds.
